1. ElevenLabs: best for trying it free Hands-on tested

A monthly free allowance of about 10 minutes of speech makes it easy to experiment. In our test, a short sentence took about 1.5 seconds and downloaded as an MP3 with no watermark seen. The $6 Starter plan adds instant voice cloning. Read our review · Visit ElevenLabs

2. Murf: best for budget voiceovers with commercial rights Hands-on tested

Murf Studio's free plan lets you try 10 minutes of voice generation (our 5-second test used about 1 second of it), but in our test there was no way to download on free, and it has no commercial rights. Creator ($19/month billed yearly) adds 200+ voices, unlimited downloads and commercial rights. Developers can use its pay-as-you-go API instead. Compare with ElevenLabs · Visit Murf

How to choose

  1. Will you use the audio commercially? Check the license. Murf's free Studio plan has no commercial rights; ElevenLabs' in-app Free card listed a commercial license for Speech and Music in our test (its public pricing page lists it under Starter), so confirm current terms.
  2. How much audio a month? Estimate characters: ElevenLabs' own figures work out to roughly 1,000 characters per minute of speech.
  3. Try before paying: both offer a free way in.

Also worth knowing

Descript Partly tested includes AI speech too. On its free plan our short sentence cost 1 of 100 starting AI credits, but our audio export never finished. Paid plans with custom voice clones start at $16/person/month. Handy if you also edit podcasts or videos.
